Fall into Fine Craft Artisan Spotlight – Marie Wohlfahrt

Today’s Spotlight Could be called Lumiere – guest artist Marie Wohlfahrt brings her continental experience and sensibility to Fall into Fine Craft and we know you’ll think she’s fantastique!

What about your medium drew you to it initially and what’s kept you working at it?

I grew up collecting seashells on the western coast of France. I have millions of them! In parallel, I’ve always been painting or drawing. I was in a workshop, mixed media came up and that’s when I linked the two together: oil painting that will incorporate sand and seashells. This resulted in abstracted 3D paintings. This will be a never-ending creation process to happily marry sand texture with real seashells and oil painting.

If you had to choose a medium, other than your current one, what would you like to try and why?

If I had to choose another medium, I would try glazed clay sculpture. The 3D aspect is intriguing and I feel it makes you want to feel and touch it!  Plus the chemistry that is involved in the glazing would remind me of my engineering degree – some of the resulting colors are predictable, some are just surprise!!

What are you most looking forward to at FIFC?

Showing my art at the FIFC is another great opportunity to network with other artists and art lovers. I find it a very stimulating experience! And finding a new home for your painting is always an exciting moment!
